Keep Kings

Saturday 19 March 2011

Lobby for access to initial information meeting presentation.

Someone called us yesterday with the excellent idea that we should go into the parental meetings....

Kings Monday 28th March / Tomlinscote Tuesday 29th March NOTE changed to Wednesday 30th March see note below.
5:00 pm - 6:45 pm for years 7,8,9
7:00 pm - 8:45 pm for years 10,11,12,13

.... with some idea of what would be presented.  As a consequence they phoned Nick Smith at Surrey County Council (Direct line 0208 541 8902) he can also be reached via (PA at 0208 541 0907) the PA route also works for his Boss Peter John Wilkinson the author of the original message.

We think this is an excellent idea that the presentation be sent to tomlinscote.kings@gmail.com so We can upload it here before the 28th March.  Understanding what will be presented will enable Kings and Tomlinscote parents to be able to prepare well informed questions.

Please lobby these people to provide the information.

At worst the information should be after the meeting for those who were unable to be present - We hope it does not take a "freedom of information" request (and the time lag that would entail)  to get it.

Update: Having seen the slides at the first presentation there is little of value in them - we need the real information.

  1. Kings has always been a failing school
Several different heads and rebranding initiatives have failed.
Why on Earth would renaming the school "Tomlinscote" make any difference?
I also understand that the "cunning plan" is to have years 7,8 & 9 attend Kings campus and years 10 to 6th attend Tomlinscote campus.
    Disastrous!
Better than another pointless re-branding exercise would be to completely change Kings.
Make it a 6th Form College to rival Farnborough and move the (underachieving and undersubscribed) 6th forms from Tomlinscote and Collingwood there.
The years 7 to 11 from Kings could be split between Tomlinscote & Collingwood thus minimising the impact of a large ingress of kids many of whom are from a deprived background.
I am told that this suggestion has no chance whatever of being adopted as the schools get large sums for sixth form pupils so it would be turkeys voting for Christmas

  2. So much so Tomlinscote was actually giving 6th formers £500 to stay rather than go to Farnborough 6th!!!!

  3. i attended tomlinscote 6th form and i defiantly did not get paid £500 to stay... i stayed as it is a really good 6th form to attend, where the teachers know their students and how they work and who knew me for the 8 years that i was a student.

  4. Tomlinscote don't pay student to stay on to their sixth form. This cost would be massive and the school and the sixth form don't have this kind of money! they have never paid nor will pay.

  5. Sounds like EMA money rather then a school hand out.

  6. I have just had a long conversation with N Smith, yes he does answer the phone!!.He was very informative, at least alot more then the meetings have been!. They don't want to close K as they are hoping that the Deepcut housing will be built between 2016 and 2021 and so want to keep the capacity that K has. The council can asnswer questions re sites, morning and home transport, traffic but School will decides anything during school hours and in the schools. He seemed keen to take on board the conerns of parents at both schools.

  7. Re the £12 million site sale. If he has got it right then they were talking about the land between the school and the motorway. This has always been fenced off from the school so would not be a loss to it. Dog walkers may well be upset though as that is what it is used for at the moment. The other thing with that land is that the M3 is elevated there so would be at bedroom height!

  8. I agree to Simon's proposal of utilising King's International as a 6th Form and let Tomlinscote and Collingwood concentrate as a Secondary School. It is a good proposal rather than having small 6th form school at both sites. Developing Kings as a big 6th form same as the Farnborough one is one thing that SCC has to consider in their plan. They have tried Kings as another Secondary School in the area for how long now? and it is not going as plan. Please rethink your strategy. Another big 6th form school in the area (Surrey area) not 2 small 6th form school with secondary school attached to it will be more competetive and King's compound is a good area for this.
