A Central Committee

On Tuesday 5th April a number of concerned parents from both schools and community members met to discuss the Tomlinscote / Kings merger proposal.

Those present agreed that our preferred option would be to have educational choice in Surrey Heath and that this is best served by having Tomlinscote, Collingwood and Kings separately offering distinctive and excellent education.

The group also agreed that the proposed takeover of Kings by Tomlinscote presents a very high risk to the quality of education of students at both schools.

The group will examine SurreyCCs assertion that Kings continuing as a separate school is not viable and seek to highlight the grave risks posed to students’ education by the proposed takeover and split site working.

The group will investigate credible alternatives to the proposal which will deliver both choice and educational excellence.

The discussion centred on organisation and how working groups could be established to address key areas.

If you agree with us and would like to help to fight this proposal please indicate your support by sending an email to tomlinscote.kings.nomerger@gmail.com - no replies will be given from this address it will only be used to determine support levels. Names and expressions of support are will obviously help legitimise the list, but are not essential, names will not be published but we may contact you with important information.  We need your support in order to represent your views.

If you want to help, particularly if you have a particular expertise relevant to the campaign, please do get in touch with tomlinscote.kings@gmail.com.

We would like to arrange an open meeting and are trying to find a suitable time and location. Given the number of parents finding a location is not proving easy. We will post an update on this as soon as possible.

Ravenscote hire out their school hall on an hourly basis, would this be any good for the meeting? My company will give the first £10 towards any hire and I am sure parents would be only too willing to help out, perhaps do a whip round a the end? 50p - £1 each.

  5. Hello everyone, I have a quick question...

I heard someone opposing the merger on the radio yesterday morning saying there had been a 'rushed consultation'.

As far as I'm aware, there hasn't been any kind of consultation so far: the idea is just preliminary and consultation will follow later. Isn't it wrong to claim otherwise?

  6. The consultation is 6 weeks. No information has been provided whatsoever in advance of the 6 week consultation. FOI requests take a minimum of 20 days so with a little stalling we get nothing.

Its a bit like giving one formula one team a years notice of the parameters and rules that will pertain to the next season and everyone else 6 weeks notice - not a level playing field I hear.

The Governors are being similarly rushed I imagine. How can you do the "due diligence" for a restructuring project of the magnitude suggested in a few weeks - including the decision of which consultancy companies to hire.

I appreciate they don't want this to drag on but SurreyCC should either have done "due diligence" before floating this or they should have presented a full detailed plan for us to understand. All we have had so far is evasiveness.

  7. I would be very happy to make a contribution in order to ensure a suitable venue is secured.

  8. I think I could get a venue for free of a suitable size. If this is of interest, let me know.

  9. Can you clarify whether there is anyone with a child at Kings on the committee or is it just Tomlinscote parents?

  10. Steve Lapthorn (Vice Chair) and Barbara Lapthorn (Treasurer) and Tina Carney (Community Rep) all have children at Kings International.

That is 3/8 of the committee positions.

Mark Reynolds is aslo a very enthusiastic Kings parent who is heavily involved.

There are a few more who participate but prefer not to do so publicly.

We would encourage more Kings parents to join but I think that Kings is well represented by a number of enthusiastic champions who are well connected with many other Kings parents and staff.

If you are a Kings parent and would like to get in touch we'd love to hear from you tomlinscote.kings@gmail.com.
