Subject: The Future of Kings International College and Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College

Surrey County Council is giving notice that it is formally withdrawing the current proposal concerning Kings International College and Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College. The council had consulted on a proposal to (1) close Kings International College for Business and the Arts and (2) expand Tomlinscote School to take in the pupils and site of Kings International. The expanded school would have been spread across the two sites.
Surrey County Council has listened to the views expressed by, parents, local people and other stakeholders regarding the proposed merger of Tomlinscote School and Kings International College.
Cabinet Member for Children and Learning Peter Martin said: "In the light of the responses to the consultation and the subsequent decision of the Tomlinscote School governing body not to go ahead with our proposal, we have today decided not to continue with the consultation."
"We remain committed to making secure educational provision on the Kings International site, and Kings and Tomlinscote will continue to work closely and effectively together."
The council will work with local schools to ensure a viable and successful long-term future for educational provision across the area.

what a complete waste of tax payers time and money. I wish I had an endless pot of coffers which I could throw at an outrageous and ill thought out scheme. The anxiety and damage that this inept council has caused is immeasurable and I hope that the right people at SCC are held accountable (thats you i'm talking about PJ)for this disgraceful proposal and the way it was managed.

Well done to CAM for running a great campaign. I really believe it was the combination of lobbying, posters on the streets and cars, arranging walks between the schools and the coordinated feedback to the governors that delivered this result.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard the proposal from PJ Wilkinson during the pre-consultation meeting, I really felt that there was little we could do to influence this mega school from being created.
I'm really pleased that this is now not going ahead. I think we should now focus on what we can do to give Kings a positive future with leadership that delivers excellent education there.
It's a shame PJ didn't have the professional sense of responsibility for writing the above letter and delegated it to his junior.

ReplyDeleteThis is really great news. I phoned Nick Smith at SCC for verbal confirmation just to make sure I was not mistaken in my interpretation of the SCC letter. We need to remain vigilant though, just in case SCC try again.

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to mention that I have tried speaking to Nicholas Smith (SCC), to ask what internal review they are planning around this fiasco. (See my related comments about lessons learned in the previous "No..No..No.." thread). However nobody within the SCC department appears to be taking calls at present...
Anyway I will keep chasing, and can post any feedback received here, should others be interested.

ReplyDeleteI don't think they trust PJ with pens at the moment. Some very senior people have been vocally critical of his fiasco.
